Music Therapy is a healing arts discipline that requires a bachelors degree in music, along with two years of music therapy curriculum course work and field study, followed by a six-month internship. Board certification is achieved through periodic examinations and/or continuing education.

Examples of some Music Therapy techniques used by a trained music therapist are melodic or rhythmic improvisation with a non-verbal client, guided imagery, progressive muscle relaxation, and coordinated breathing while following musical tones. Exploring specific musical influence on behavior, songwriting, lyric analysis, and energizing or improving self-esteem through performance, are also techniques, just to name a few.
The personality of the therapist, with their creativity, empathy, and imagination, along with their training, creates a unique experience for clients seeking holistic healing through the power and universality of music.
